Set in Johannesburg in 1968, at the height of apartheid, Laundry follows a Black family running a small laundry business in a whites-only district. Their fragile livelihood exists thanks to a rare state exemption that could be revoked at any moment, turning everyday survival into a quiet act of resistance.
Within the family, tensions begin to surface. Khuthala dreams of a future in music, while his father Enoch sees the business as the only protection against a system determined to dispossess them. As pressure from the regime intensifies, the household is pulled between ambition, duty and the instinct to endure.
One of our student curators was particularly struck by the film’s use of colour. The muted greys and dust-toned streets of segregated Johannesburg contrast with the warmer, richer hues of the family’s home and laundrette – a visual reminder that even under oppression, spaces of resilience, culture and hope can still take root.
