THE BRIEF
Festival context

Sands evokes the very essence of film, reflecting the sense of St Andrews as a place and of the people who live and work here. Sand is as transient as a frame of film, yet leaves a lasting and emotional impression, in the same way as a great film can.

Vision

A significant event in Scotland’s cultural calendar, Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews is a three-day event presenting an exciting and diverse international showcase of contemporary and classic cinema alongside a range of supporting events. The 2023 festival takes place 14 – 16 April 2023 in the historic town of St Andrews.

Sands believes in the transformative power of artists; politically, socially, artistically: artists who are making an impact, changing perspectives and inspiring audiences around the world. We are firmly focused on making the Festival into an accessible, audience-friendly event that pushes boundaries and introduces new filmmaking voices to our local communities.

Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews creates an important space for exchanging ideas, opinions and inspirations in the framework of an accessible, inclusive film event.

The competition

The Festival Director and Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews Steering Committee invite you to create an image to appear on the festival’s publicity, NOT a logo, in response to the Festival’s mission to explore what the idea of excellence means to various artists and members of the film industry and how it manifests itself. In particular, we want you to explore the idea of BEGINNINGS.

You should bear in mind that all Festival communications must be accessible to people, regardless of their ability or disability, so think about contrasting tones, size and vocabulary used in any text or images you might choose to employ and the image’s ability to adapt across various formats.

The winning design will have appeal across a range of demographics, with the ability to attract the attention of students, academics, artists and people from our many and varied local communities.
