Film Studies
With deep roots in the University of St Andrews, Sands takes pride in its close ties with the University’s prestigious Department of Film Studies and offers unique opportunities for students to connect with film festival curation and filmmaking talent operating at the highest levels.
Film studies at St Andrews has particular expertise in:
- global film cultures of production, distribution, and exhibition
- film and media historiography
- audio-visual environments
- documentary and non-fiction cinema
The Department of Film Studies enjoys a strong and supportive student-staff culture, consistently receiving the highest possible ratings of satisfaction amongst students in course evaluations and in student satisfaction polls. It was ranked first for Media Studies in the National Student Survey 2019 with 100% student satisfaction and second in the UK for Media and Film Studies by the Guardian University Guide 2020.
Courses are taught by leading scholars in the discipline, enabling students to engage with, research and evaluate the very latest ideas and materials.
The courses on offer are:
- Film Studies MA (Hons) either as single honours or with a number of joint subject options
- Film Studies BA (International Hons), a joint degree with the Department of Film and Media Studies at the College of William & Mary in Virginia.
Students are also involved in a wide range of film-related activities beyond the classroom, such as the 60 Hour Film Blitz at the Byre (a short film competition with just 60 hours to make a film), research internships and talks from industry professionals.
The Department encourages students to get involved and lead film activities across the University.
